Build an effective strategy

Do you ever wonder why some companies are successful and perform better than others? Or why some are hard to beat and others are not? Well, if a company wants to stay competitive in the industry, it must create and execute a strategy that is good and sound.

A strategy is a long-term plan that you create for your company to reach the desired, future state you envision. A strategy includes your company's goals and objectives, the type of products/services that you plan to build, the customers who you want to sell to and the markets that you serve to make profits.

Before we get into the details of building a strategy, it is vital to understand how a strategy differs from a plan.

While both terms are often interchangeably used, they are two entirely different things:

strategy refers to an organization’s long-term goals and how it plans to reach them. In other words, it shows the path to achieve the defined vision.

plan refers to the specific actions taken to reach the set goals in line with the strategy.  You may have presented a business plan to raise funding.

The existence of a strategy is a critical success factor for any business.

Essentially, it reflects the strengths and weaknesses of the company and answers how the company plans to respond to the threats and opportunities in the market in which it operates.

A strategy takes into account the resources at hand and how to best deploy them to achieve its set objectives.

KPI’s are a very important aspect to a functioning strategy, but keep in mind that KPI’s are usually internal measurements of what you have accomplished.  A strategy is the guiding light on what you want to achieve and as such looks at both internal and external factors to help you become as successful as you want.

That is a very common challenge that we come across and when you are knee deep in the weeds growing your business it is often hard to make the time.  That is exactly why using a business coach to help formulate your strategy will ensure you get clarity in your communication to give you the freedom to run your business and not have your business run you.
